At last, someone who has expressed in clear terms why Labour are too timid! Well said Ryan.

Quote - “If Labour is to have any chance of winning in 2026, they must become more economically populist, not less.”

I totally agree.

The temerity of Labour last government was awful, and they still F***ing LOST!!!

40 years of neoliberal make the rich richer must end somehow.

Now, how do we motivate those disconnected from politics and not voting?

How do we convince Chippy and his cohorts to grow the gonads to change from being a party looking like a neoliberal lackey?

Great post Ryan. Do you follow Gary's Economics (on YouTube)? He explains how the middle class is being gutted in the UK, how blaming migrants is a distraction from the faster and faster funneling of wealth from the middle and lower classes (and the government) to the uber wealthy, and only redistribution via very high taxes on the very rich (among other measures) to begin slowing/halting the massive inequality in the making....

I was very impressed that she jammed the assault weapons ban in 30 days. In my country it won't happen in 30 decades

I apologise for my ignorance, but what, exactly, do you mean by ‘economic populism ’? This is a genuine question 🥹

No apologies necessary. Economic populism is basically an acknowledgment that there is a huge gap in wealth between the majority of people and the super rich. Politicians who campaign on economic populism will propose policy that redistributes wealth from the rich. Another way to think about it is a class-based politics: working class vs the rich.

Thanks Ryan. I had the gist of it but it seems such an obvious route to follow if you’re opposed to this other crap that’s taking over. Do you think Labour just doesn’t have anyone with the strength ( or charisma perhaps)? There’s Ayesha….Chloe…. but doubly hard for a woman to be heard

Unfortunately economic populism for many kiwis involves the mantra, “I’m in the boat…push off!” Also there is growing push back against the identity politics of the left. The goal for any aspiring government of the left must be to return wealth to the many through redirecting ‘dividend’ income derived from private ownership of shares in public utilities into state coffers to improve access to healthcare, affordable housing and free education. Unfortunately I just don’t see this happening because we are entrenched in a me not we society

Hi interesting stuff

As we saw from the last election the field is not level so are our elections free and fair, from a financial perspective no,

The right had access to large amounts of funding local and offshore so the ability to introduce any progressive measures is an uphill fight from day one.

This will be the case in the next election to definitely less funding for the left.

Cheers

There are more than two parties I government these days. Instead of exhorting a timid Labour party to develop some strong redistributive policy, how about suggesting everyone concerned about inequity vote Green and/or TPM?
